James Gourlay

When I retired from a busy life as a project engineer, I took up my old brushes, bought a load of acrylic paints, and just got stuck in.

That was twenty years ago and the learning curve is still going on.

I am  inspired by what  I see around me, mostly seeing landscape, shapes and the play of light and shade.

I think a painting should tell a story and convey a sense of movement, depth and atmosphere.

My paintings do not evolve, the engineer in me requires the work to be carefully planned with the main elements in the correct place, correct scale and the choice of colour tones to match the subject.

When it all comes together, the feeling of achievement makes it all worth while.
